Spikes in blood pressure

It is very common for blood pressure to rise during a panic attack or an anxiety episode. My blood pressure was at the 200/100 range when I had panic attacks.

Why are people who have anxiety obsessed with their blood pressure readings? It is because as human, we are curious by nature. We want answer for our problems. Especially when it comes to our health and survival, we don’t like to deal with the unknown. And blood pressure readings are the cheapest and the most readily option out there. Anyone can buy a blood pressure monitor. You can go on any anxiety and panic attack forum and see people posting the reading of their blood pressure and asking people for reassurance.

If you take a moment and think about this; does it make much sense to measure out blood pressure under the state of anxiety? It’s like turning on a stove and wonder why it’s hot.

I know it’s easy to say that we don’t need to measure our blood pressure all day every day, but it’s really hard to do when you’re an anxiety sufferer. I had 4 monitors: one in my car, one in my house, one at work and one at my girlfriend’s house. Somehow having a blood pressure monitor nearby made me feel better and more secured.

Now that I’m fully recovered from anxiety and panic attacks, I don’t remember the last time I measured my blood pressure. I don’t even know where my blood pressure monitors are. And this is coming from a guy who measured his blood pressure 10-20 times a day.

Don’t use your blood pressure monitor as a punching bag so you can blame it for everything anxiety makes you feel. Anxiety is a master of manipulation. It causes your blood pressure to rise, then convinces you that the high readings are caused by something else. By doing so it receives what it needs to stay alive, and that is fear.

Work on your anxiety so you can remove fear from your life. Without fear, anxiety and panic attacks cannot survive. They will starve and fade away from your life along with all of their scary -but safe- sensations.

Symptoms are like battles. You can win one here and there, but attacking your anxiety helps you win the war.
